How to Clean Tile and Grout in Florida

Keep your tile floors and walls looking new in our humid climate

January 16, 2026 6 min read

Tile is popular in Florida homes because it stays cool and handles humidity well. But Florida's moisture can make grout dirty fast. Mold, mildew, and stains build up quicker here than in dry climates. Here's how to keep your tile and grout clean.

Why Grout Gets Dirty in Florida

Grout is porous. It absorbs moisture and stains. Florida's environment makes this worse:

  • High humidity feeds mold and mildew
  • Hard water leaves mineral deposits
  • Sandy soil tracked indoors scratches and stains
  • Warm temperatures help bacteria grow
  • Frequent rain means more dirt tracked inside

Daily Tile Care

Simple daily habits prevent big cleaning jobs:

  • Sweep or dry mop daily - Removes sand and dirt that scratch tile
  • Wipe up spills right away - Don't let liquids sit on grout
  • Use doormats - Trap dirt before it reaches your floors
  • Squeegee shower walls - Prevents mold between tiles
  • Run bathroom fans - Keeps tile dry after showers

Weekly Tile Cleaning

Basic Weekly Clean

  1. Sweep or vacuum first to remove loose dirt
  2. Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap
  3. Mop tile floors using the solution
  4. Rinse mop often - dirty water spreads grime
  5. Go over floors with clean water to remove soap
  6. Dry with a clean towel if needed

Tip: Don't use too much soap. Soap residue attracts more dirt.

How to Clean Grout

Method 1: Baking Soda Paste

Good for light to medium stains:

  1. Mix baking soda and water into a thick paste
  2. Apply paste to grout lines
  3. Let sit for 5-10 minutes
  4. Scrub with a grout brush or old toothbrush
  5. Rinse with clean water
  6. Wipe dry

Method 2: Vinegar Solution

Good for mildew and soap scum:

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in spray bottle
  2. Spray directly on grout
  3. Wait 5 minutes
  4. Scrub with brush
  5. Rinse thoroughly

Warning: Don't use vinegar on natural stone tile like marble or travertine. It can etch the surface.

Method 3: Hydrogen Peroxide

Good for mold and stubborn stains:

  1. Apply hydrogen peroxide directly to grout
  2. Let it fizz for 10 minutes
  3. Scrub with brush
  4. Rinse with water

Tip: For tough stains, make a paste with peroxide and baking soda.
